God’s Amazing Grace May 2, 2021

“Amazing Grace” is a popular hymn that many people sing in churches worldwide. It begins with the famous opening line “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.” During everyday life, do we fully receive God’s grace that we so passionately sing about?

Grace is a free gift given to all. Despite our error thinking, God’s grace and favor is available. Why is it important to receive God’s grace and view it as the amazing gift it is? It is important because it allows us to live and walk in a state of continual humility and repentance. God’s grace provides us hope that there is forgiveness and redemption for our error thinking, and that each day is another opportunity to extend that same grace to others.

Grace is not given to a select few, but to all. Whatever season or situation you may currently be facing, God’s grace is available to you.

The Hero’s Journey-Return with a Gift April 11, 2021

The Hero’s Journey- Return with a Gift

The Hero’s Journey is now complete! The hero – that’s us! – returns to the ordinary world. Returning, we undergo a personal metamorphosis, and realize just how the adventure has changed us. This week we will look at our spiritual hero, Jesus, as well as some examples from classic movies to see that our last act on the journey is to return to our ordinary world with a gift that could only have been acquired on the Journey.
The lesson for us all in the Hero’s Journey is this: The discovery of our TRUE SELF is our HEART’S DESIRE, and at the end of our Hero’s Journey, we arrive with the HOPE that we have finally come HOME.

The Hero’s Journey- We Have a Choice! – April 4, 2021

We Have a Choice!

Today, we come to celebrate Easter Sunday – the commemoration of the day that Jesus demonstrated how we must die to the old life in order to be born into the new one. This is the culmination of the Hero’s Journey that we have been on since the beginning of February.  Joseph Campbell spoke of this idea as “resurrection” in the Hero’s Journey:  “The hero’s death and resurrection is a model for the casting off of the old life and moving into the new.”  In following Jesus on the penultimate path of transformation, we take along the final four of the Twelve Powers:  Order, Zeal, Renunciation and Life.  As always, we have a choice:  To live as we are or to die in order to be re-born as something greater!

Tenebrae (Good Friday) Service – April 2, 2021

Tenebrae Service

Tenebrae means “shadows and darkness.” Here at Unity, we participate in this service in order to come to a deeper realization of the Light of Christ within us.

This powerful and moving service uses prayer, meditation, and  music to illuminate our own levels of willingness to let go and to dedicate ourselves to our spiritual unfoldment.

THE HERO’S JOURNEY – Hitting Rock Bottom – Palm Sunday- March 28, 2021

Hitting Rock Bottom – Hero’s Journey
We are one week away from Easter Sunday. A lot can happen in a week. Just last week, we saw our hero, Jesus, depart from Jerusalem after it became known that the authorities wanted to arrest him. We are told that he spent a week in Ephraim, coming to terms with what he had set into motion. We called this time apart, “The Innermost Cave,” where he faced what is called the Dragon on the Hero’s Journey.
This week, we will look closely at that confrontation between Jesus and his Dragon, and we will look at how we, too, are being called to confront our own personal Dragon this Easter season. Through the example of Jesus, we will learn valuable lessons in how to approach this time of trial, called The Ordeal, and see if we are willing to follow our Wayshower into death so that we, too, may be born anew.
In Joseph Campbell’s book, Hero with a Thousand Faces, this is the stage of the journey called The Ordeal. There are many ways to describe this stage. Here are a few: It is a trial, a fire walk, our opportunity to choose between the transient things of this world and the lasting things of “heaven.” It is our individual call to let go of the personal ego, with all of its mind-made facts and truths, and to grab hold of the Divine Nature that is the Essence of each of us.

THE HERO’S JOURNEY- Friends for the Road March 7, 2021

THE HERO’S JOURNEY –Friends for the Road
Buoyed by his success on the mountaintop with the devil, Jesus decides to go home to Nazareth. There, he drops into his local temple, picks up a scroll and reads from the book of Isaiah. The passage he reads is messianic. Afterwards, he declares that the Scripture has been fulfilled. The meaning is obvious: He is the Messiah! Jesus begins to preach to in the synagogue. This riles up the people, and he decides to leave town once again. It’s clear that this is the point of no return for our hero, Jesus. He has set his course, and now sets out in earnest on the arduous part of the Hero’s Journey. Along the way, he picks up a few things he will need for the journey. He handpicks some friends, beginning with: Faith, Strength, Wisdom and Love. He eventually ends up with a full complement of friends that support him on his journey to becoming the Christ. In Unity, we call these friends, our Twelve Powers. Although much will happen with these friends along the way, we know that Jesus will ultimately triumph. As we look at our own lives, what was the point of no return for us on our Hero’s Journey? Who was with us at the beginning? Who is still with us? What role do our friends play in our journey? We will explore this, and more, this Sunday, March 7, 2021. -Rev. Jean DeBarbieris
